For their efforts however, Nicholas I had the leaders of the rebellion executed and exiled the rest to the bitter cold labor camps of Siberia.

As some sort of clemency, Nicholas I made it so that the wives of the Decabrist rebels would be viewed as widows and allowed to re-marry. Of the 121 rebels sentenced to exile, 11 wives decided to persevere with their husbands and hold true to their sacred marital vows of good times and bad. Mind you, both the men and women of the Decabrist clique were of the aristocratic class, meaning bitter cold and hard labor were definitely foreign concepts to them. Nonetheless, the wives would forget their pampered past and stay with their husbands.

It would be 20 years before the remaining Decabrists would be allowed to re-assimilate back into Russian society and be done with the toils in the coal mines. Their civil rights gradually being restored, the Decabrists would inch their way back into the normal life. First, they were allowed into Irkutsk, a major city in Siberia, but they would not be allowed to participate in public activities. It was not until 1856 that Tsar Alexander I amnestied the remaining 19 Decabrists. Some returned to the European parts of Russia; however, Moscow and St.Petersburg were still off-limits.

Decabrists became the token of spirit of freedom against tsarism in Russia and theirs wives were and are considered heroines in Russia.Russian poet, Nikolai Nekrasov, wrote a poem devoted to the Decabrist’s wives in which he described the whole ordeal of two women – Princess Ekaterina Trubetskaya and Princess Maria Volkonskaya. While on the way to join her husband, Princess Trubetskaya met a general, who tried to stop her from pursuing that route. His words for her were, “You are following him as a pitiful slave”. Trubetskaya answered, “No, I am not a pitiful slave! I am a woman – a wife!” Those words became an epitome of devotion and love of Russian women.Knowing that part of Russian history makes it easier to understand how and why Russian women put their family so high on the scale of things. On this day in Russian history (1958), Poklonnaya Hill was dedicated as a memorial to all the brave Russian men and women, who braved impossible odds to serve their country in the Great Patriotic War, more commonly known as World War II or the Second World War.

Every May 9th, World War II veterans reconvene at Poklonnaya Hill to celebrate Victory Day and remember those, who did not survive the War to see the fruits of their labors. Below, you can also see that Poklonnaya Hill has also been the site of protests signifying great cultural significance to the Russian people.

On this day in Russian history (1740), an answerto “what if women ruled the world?” took precedence. Empress Anna Loannovnaforced one of her court jesters, Mikhail Golitsyn, to marry another of hercourt jesters, the homely Avdotia Buzheninova. To prove this wedding wasnothing more than a spectacle, Empress Anna formed the “Masquerade Commission”to plan a grand wedding. A house constructed entirely of ice would be built inhonor of the occasion.

"The house was built from ice blocks, and its decorations and interior were made of ice, without using any materials. Its facade was built about 16 meters long; the house was 5 meters wide and six meters high. A porch divided the building in two halves, with rooms in each half: living room and dining room in one, bathroom and bedroom in another. The House was furnished with ice furniture - there were tables, armchairs, sofas, a bed and a sideboard with tableware. The tableware was made of ice too, and so were the candles. To light the candle one had to smear it with petroleum. In the fireplace burned ice logs, also smeared with petroleum."

The inspiration behind this forced union was Avdiota's audible lamenting about how she would always be the bride's maid and never the bride so Empress Anna took it upon herself to find her a match made in matrimony. Unfortunately for the unwitting Mikhail Golitsyn, his hand would be betrothed without his consent. Fact was, Mikhail, having mourned the passing of his first wife, moved to Italy and fell in love as well as changed his religion to Catholicism. Upon returning to Moscow, he learned that he had been promised to fellow court jester, Avdotia. Mikhail would be forced to divorce his newlywed wife, who was sent back to Italy. On this day in Russian history (1947), as part of an isolation policy post World War II, Stalin decreed that the union between Soviet and foreign peoples would be prohibited in Russia. This ruling also applied to already-contracted marriages including that of a Chilean ambassador’s son, Alvaro Kluse, who had married one Lydia Lesina. The two were forced apart when Alvaro was forced to leave Moscow when diplomatic relations between Russia and Chile has ceased.

The prohibition on marrying foreigners would be repealed six years later under Krushschev; however, the situation was not made any more hospitable. Instead of a blatant law preventing Russian citizens marrying foreigners, marital bliss would be tangled by a web of red bureaucratic tape.

It was not until 1970 that the government would allow Soviet citizens to emigrate elsewhere, which in turn, also meant they could marry anybody they like so long as it was outside of Mother Russia. Finally in 1991 when the Soviet Union collapsed, any such hindrance preventing the intermarriage of cultures and nationalities was lifted, becoming nothing more than a relic of phased out Soviet ideology.

In the Nolan Brothers' film, "Insomnia", Al Pacino's character was mentally torn to shreds by the endless summer days of an Alaskan town. Up until a year ago, Russians used to observe daylights saving. When acting President Dimitry Medvedev announced that Russia would no longer adjust their national clocks, the majority of the general public was all for it. A year later, Russia is nearing the end of its first winter without daylight savings.

Having resisted the urge to push their clocks forward an hour, Russians had to get used to putting up with their day-to-day of work without much sunshine.

This move to go against the grain, however, does not seem too productive. Being a card puncher, myself, I can tell you The workforce needs its sleep.

This article was published with the intent of shining light upon Russia's winter weather, but since we started with a movie reference, we might as well finish on one. "The Machinist" starring Christian Bale is a must-see movie about a man, who hasn't slept in almost a year. It's a bit extreme, but just imagine trying to operate heavy machinery when your eyes are burning from sleep deprivation.

Russian Ukha (Fish Soup)

Ukha (pronounced oo-h'a) is one of the oldest Russian dishes. It originated inXI-XII centuries. Back then people used prettymuch anything to make Ukha. It didn’t have to include fish at all, but fish gives this soup a very unique taste and most people liked fish Ukha the most. Fish combined with vegetables and spices makes this soup flavorful and hearty. If you love fish or seafood in general you definitely have to try this.

This soup can be made from various types of fish, depends onyour preferences. The most common types are sturgeon, salmon, or cod. There are three ways of making Ukha:

White – it has onion in it
Yellow – with Crocus
Black - cooks with black pepper, Cinnamon, and clove

Here is one simple recipe for White Ukha:

Ingredients:

Fish stock:

1 onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
1 stalk celery, with leaves, chopped
4-5 cups water
twist of lemon peel
salt and white pepper
bay leaf
1 to 1 and 1/2 lbs of fish trimmings, heads, and bones, evenshrimp shells
optional: up to a cup of white wine

Ukha:

1 lb white fish fillets, sliced into 6 serving pieces
6 thin slices of lime
1 tbsp finely cut fresh dill leaves

Method:

Slowly bring all ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan,skimming when necessary.
Partially cover, and cook at a medium heat for 20-30minutes.
Bring stock to a boil in a large saucepan. Lower in the fish filletsand reduce heat to low. Simmer for 3-4 minutes--until the fish is just opaque.
Carefully lift the fish out and put into flat soup bowls. Pour hot stock ontop, squeeze a little lime juice into each bowl, float a thin lime slice ontop, and sprinkle with dill.
Serve at once.

Not Just When But How - Russian Holidays

Just when most of the Yanks and Western Europeans are through with their Christmas and New Year's celebrations, the indigenous people of Russia, Ukraine, and other former USSR countries are still in a holiday party mode.The Russian, Jerusalem, Serbian and Georgian Orthodox churches all track their day-to-day by the Julian calendar so Christmas is actually honored on the 7^th of January. That's a whole 13 days after the Gregorian calendar's December 25^th. Aside from the difference in days, Slavic families observe the holidays just slightly different from the rest of the world.

On Christmas Eve, Russian families celebrate with a wide variety of delicious dishes, which can be inspired from any number of regions throughout Eastern Europe and Asia. Traditionally, there are twelve courses served throughout the night. As it is, more or less, a religious holiday, each course is supposed to represent one of Jesus Christ's twelve apostles. Regardless of how many people are in attendance, which, generally speaking, is always a full house, the meal is intended to be a feast especially since it also marks the end of a fasting period. Just don't blurt out, "Where's the beef?" at the table in an attempt to be pop-culturally clever. First of all, no one will get that reference (see below) and, secondly, no meat dishes are typically served on Christmas Eve. Still though, expect your taste buds to be wowed and your stomach filled.

Kutia

Supper starts with “kutia”, which is a pudding dish consisting of grains, raisins, honey and poppy seeds. The grains symbolize hope while the sweetness of honey symbolizes happiness and the seeds represent peace. Hopefully you are not a germ-a-phobe as Russian families value their togetherness and as a symbol of their unity, everyone will eat from the same plate.

To tease the appetite before the main course, dinner tables are laced with platter of peas or lentils, vareniki (boiled dumplings filled with potatoes, cabbage or prunes), and golubtsi (staffed cabbage). Expect to see a parade of dishes brandishing anything from potatoes, dried fruit to soups like Borscht (beet soup), which is a very popular Russian and Christmas dish. I know I said there would be no meat, but there will be fish prepared in all sorts of ways - fried, broiled and baked.

Draping the dinner table with a white cloth is an absolute must come Christmas time as it is supposed to represent the swaddling cloth covering sweet baby Jesus when he was born in the Nativity manger. Caroling is an inevitable and universal facet of any Christmas celebration, after all, you have to be in a pretty good mood to sing in unison with others. Children go from house to house scoring candy and other treats for their performances somewhat like Halloween minus the costumes.

Divination

For the women, the Christmas divination ritual is the highlight of the holiday. Although more for fun than superstition than anything, it is a long-standing tradition. Using only a candle, your Russian women playfully learn what their future husband will be like and even their name. Just imagine if the internet had not been invented.
